Age Limit

For those eyeing this fantastic opportunity, NCL has set the age limit for applicants between 18 to 26 years as of June 1st, 2026. This means you should have been born between June 1st, 2000, and June 1st, 2008, to be eligible. Don’t worry if you fall into a reserved category, as age relaxation will be provided according to Government of India guidelines. Check the official notification for precise details on how much relaxation applies:

  • Unreserved (UR/EWS): 26 years (No relaxation)
  • SC/ST Candidates: Up to 31 years (+5 years)
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) Candidates: Up to 29 years (+3 years)
  • PwBD (UR/EWS): Up to 36 years (+10 years)
  • PwBD (SC/ST): Up to 41 years (+15 years)
  • PwBD (OBC): Up to 39 years (+13 years)

Educational Qualification

To jump into an NCL apprenticeship, you’ll need to meet specific educational requirements. Generally, a full-time, regular qualification from a recognized institution (like AICTE/UGC/BTE/NCVT/SCVT) is a must – sorry, no part-time or distance learning here! Depending on whether you’re aiming for a Graduate, Diploma, Trade (ITI), or Paramedical Apprentice role, your degree or diploma should be in a relevant discipline. For instance,

Graduate Apprentices need a B.E./B.Tech/B.Com/BA/LLB/BCA, while Trade Apprentices require Matriculation plus an ITI Certificate. A crucial point: your qualifying exam must have been passed after June 2022. Also, if you’ve already completed an apprenticeship or have more than one year of job experience, you won’t be eligible for this round. Applicants must have passed their requisite qualification from a recognized institute located in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh.

NCL Apprentice Recruitment 2026 Selection Process

Forget about a stressful written exam! NCL’s Apprentice selection process is refreshingly merit-based, meaning your academic performance in your qualifying examination will be key. Your marks will determine your place on the shortlist.

The process unfolds in a few straightforward steps:

  1. Online Application: First, get your application in via the NATS or NAPS portal.
  2. Merit List Preparation: NCL will then compile a merit list, ranking candidates based on their qualifying exam scores. For Graduate apprentices, it’s your degree percentage. For Diploma, it’s an average of Matriculation and Diploma percentages. For ITI, it’s an average of Matriculation and ITI percentages.
  3. Shortlisting & Release: Keep an eye out for the merit list of shortlisted candidates, tentatively expected around June 20th, 2026.
  4. Document Verification: If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be called for document verification where your original certificates will be checked.
  5. Medical Examination: A medical fitness test, adhering to the Mines Rules, 1955, will be conducted by a government hospital.
  6. Final Offer: Once cleared, you’ll receive your final offer and register for the apprenticeship contract.

In case of a tie in marks, the older candidate will be preferred, and if still tied, alphabetical order of names (as per the English dictionary) will be the tie-breaker.
